The Creative Writing Program at Southern Illinois University is proud to present Writers In Common, an all-ages event for creative writers! Join us this June for the second meeting of this all-ages event for writers of all backgrounds and experience levels.

 Writers In Common will include:

  • Adult critique workshops in poetry and prose
  • Generative workshops for high school students
  • Panel on publishing poetry and fiction
  • Youth Poetry Slam with Prizes
  • Reception with Keynote Speaker

Faculty

Allison Joseph
(adult critique workshop in poetry)
Allison Joseph is a Professor of English at Southern Illinois University Carbondale and the founder of Writers in Common. Her many books of poems include Soul Train, Mercurial, What Keeps Us Here, My Father's Kites, and Confessions of a Barefaced Woman. 

Justin Hamm
(Keynote Speaker, adult critique workshop in fiction)

Originally from the flatlands of central Illinois, Justin Hamm now lives near Twain territory in Missouri. He is the founding editor of the museum of americana and the author of American Ephemeral and Lessons in Ruin, as well as two poetry chapbooks. His poems, stories, photos, and reviews have appeared in Nimrod, The Midwest Quarterly, Sugar House Review, Pittsburgh Poetry Review, and a host of other publications. Recent work has also been selected for New Poetry from the Midwest  (2014, New American Press) and the Stanley Hanks Memorial Poetry Prize from the St. Louis Poetry Center.

Teen workshops will be led by current MFA students in creative writing at Southern Illinois University.
