Craft Shop Virtual Art Camps
The grade level for each camp is based upon the grade students will be entering when they return to school in the fall of 2020. The classes will be held via ZOOM each morning at the specified time below. Materials can be picked up in front of the Student Center on the SIU Carbondale campus.
These virtual camps will have short daily meetings via Zoom. Parents need to assist campers during this time. Each camp requires everyday household items plus supplies that will be provided. Pick up dates are listed or you can pay additional fees to have them shipped to your house.
All camps are $75 if you pick-up your supplies or $87.00 if you prefer to have them shipped (unless otherwise listed).
Magical Fairy City
June 9-12, 2020 | Pick-up: June 8
This week we will work to make a site-specific clay fairy city using artwork of artist Charles Simmonds as our inspiration. We cover how to build with Air dry clay to make sure it is well crafted. You will need to select a sleepy corner outside or on the porch to build this magnificent village, town or city. Keep in mind the weather will wash away your creation so pick your stop carefully.
Color Vision: Landscape Painting
June 16-19, 2020 | Pick-up: June 15
This week we will explore observational painting using bright and bold works of artist David Hockney. You find the perfect location indoors or outside and will learn how to draw objects in perspective to capture the space in three-dimensions. We discuss how colors interact to capture the mood of the space.
June 23-26, 2020 | Pick-up: June 22
Get outside and discover the textures and colors of your backyard. This interactive online workshop will include a zine on how to see the outside as an artist. We will introduce artists that use items from nature and go out to explore and create. We will use natural materials and record our finding in our art journal. Artist Inspiration: Andy Goldsworthy, Richard Long, Charles Burchfield.
Funny Faces Stamps
June 29 - July 1, 2020 | Pick-up: June 26
Build a stamp library to create a portrait with shapes and patterns. We will invent a character and build a background for a story using handmade stamps from supplies in our kits and around the house. Artist inspiration: Pablo Picasso.
Its Greek to ME, Ceramic Vessels
July 7-10, 2020 | Pick-up: July 6
Explore the world of Greek pottery, this workshop will focus on how to build with air-dry terra-cotta clay using coils and smoothing the texture for a paintable surface. We will explore examples from our own life for themes to painting onto the surface of our vases.
Mythical Creatures in Clay
July 15-17, 2020 | Pick-up: July 14
Discover the folklore of mythical creatures. This workshop will explore your creative mind to invent your own creatures and construct it out of oven bake clay. This week we will design on paper, construct an armature, and finish our creatures in clay.
Recycling Bin Sculpture
July 21-24, 2020 | Pick-up: July 20
This week’s workshop explores the idea of trash to treasure by using found objects around your house or in the recycling bin. We will transform trash into stunning works of art. We will explore artists that used this style of creation and use that to build our own sculptures. Artists Inspiration: Louise Nevelson, Joseph Cornell.
Colorful Kandinsky Jewelry
July 28-31, 2020 | Pick-up: July 27
Create colorful and bold polymer clay jewelry using abstract artist Kandinsky as inspiration. This workshop will focus on creating beads and string them together with found objects creating bold statement jewelry. There will most likely be extra clay which can be used for other fun projects instruction in the Craft Shop How-to Zine.
All Summer Project | Materials Shipped
Everyone loves getting mail! With all this social distancing we need to connect to our friends and family this kit supplies you will idea and some supplies to send your friends color handmade postcards. Inspired by the book: Griffin and Sabine: An Extraordinary Correspondence by Nick Bantock. Send the Craft Shop one, we love mail and would love to see your artwork, share with us how your summer is going!

The Camp Release Form is required for camp participation and must be received in our office prior to camp beginning.
ALL requests for refunds must be submitted in writing. The registration fee, less a $20 cancellation fee, will be refunded if you cancel at least 7 business days prior to the camp. Any time after that date, refunds (less the $20 fee) will be issued for medical reasons only. Refunds are not given to campers who voluntarily leave camp.
