The Aviation Flight and Aviation Management programs offer multiple Junior Aviator Camps to give youth the opportunity to learn about what pilots and mechanics do as well as learn about career paths in aviation. All camps will take place at the Southern Illinois Carbondale Airport.

Available Camps

Junior Aviator III (Pilots)

Grades: 1-3
Date: June 3-7
Time: 8:30am – 12pm
Cost: $125

The camp runs Monday through Friday with camp activities in a half day format.

This week-long half-day camp introduces children entering grades 1-3 to the world of aviation. Through fun hands-on activities, they will be introduced to how pilots prepare for a flight. Topics will include:

  1. Pilot health
  2. Types of aircraft
  3. Airports and maps
  4. Weather
  5. Flight planning

Junior Aviator III (Mechanics)

Grades: 1-3
Date: June 10-14
Time: 8:30am – 12pm
Cost: $125

The camp runs Monday through Friday with camp activities in a half day format.

This week-long half-day camp introduces children entering grades 1-3 to the world of aviation. Through fun hands-on activities, they will be introduced to how aircraft maintenance technicians do their jobs. Topics will include:

  1. Where mechanics work
  2. Tools they use
  3. Shop safety rules
  4. Types of aircraft

Junior Aviator II (Careers)

Grades: 4-5
Date: June 17-18, 20-21*
Time: 8:30am – 12pm
Cost: $175

The camp culminates with flights in SIU flight training devices. The camp runs Tuesday through Friday with camp activities beginning at 8:30am and ending at 12pm.

* Please note there is no camp on June 19

This week-long half-day camp introduces children entering grades 4-5 to a variety of career paths available in aviation. Through hands-on activities and mini-fieldtrips, they will learn more about the following careers:

  1. Pilot
  2. Maintenance Technician
  3. Air Traffic Control
  4. Aircraft Designer
  5. Weather Observer

Junior Aviator I (Careers)

Grades: 6-8
Date: July 1-3, 5*
Time: 8:30am – 4:30pm
Cost: $225

The camp culminates with a flight in SIU flight training devices and/or aircraft (weather permitting). The camp runs Tuesday through Friday with camp activities beginning at 8:30 am and ending at 4:30 pm. Each session includes lunch.
*Please note there is no camp on July 4.

This week-long day camp introduces children entering grades 6-8 to career options in aviation, with an emphasis on pilots. The week includes a variety of activities that allow the campers to learn more about:

  1. Flight planning
  2. Weather information
  3. Radio communication
  4. Aircraft performance
  5. Navigation

  • Program Requirement

    Junior Aviator Campers

    The Camp Release Form is required for camp participation and must be received in our office prior to camp beginning. 

     

  • Cancellation Policy

    All requests for refunds must be submitted in writing. The registration fee, less a $5 cancellation fee, will be refunded if you cancel at least 7 business days prior to the camp. Any time after that date, refunds (less the $5 fee) will be issued for medical reasons only and must have a signed statement from your physician. If a medical cancellation request is not received by the first day of camp, a refund is not issued.

    Refunds are not given to campers who voluntarily leave camp or who are sent home for disciplinary reasons. The University reserves the right to cancel any program. In the event of cancellation, only those pre-registered will be notified.
