Rescheduled to Fall 2022
The Brown Hotel, Louisville, Kentucky
Focus
- Overcoming management challenges related to bats for private, state, and federal organizations involved in mining.
- Developing ways to address problems encountered at mines containing bats.
Topics
- Abandoned mine lands.
- Regulatory concerns of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA).
- Biology and ecology of bats and White Nose Syndrome.
Overview
The overarching goal of this workshop is to convene a diverse community of consultants, state and federal agency personnel, mine operators, land managers, and researchers to discuss current topics pertaining to bats and mines. From this diverse group the hosts will gather information over the course of the workshop to develop a product highlighting the accomplishments of each breakout group and outline a path to address any recognized issues and inform future workshops.
Bats often pose management challenges to individuals and private, state and federal organizations involved in mining. Best management practices and guidance with consistent application across state jurisdictions are difficult to come by due to the diversity of bats and often limited information or understanding of how bats use specific mines and mines across broad landscapes. It is therefore important to periodically gather a range of experts to discuss what is working, what isn’t, and the future of bats and mines.
Who Should Attend
Consultants, state and federal agency personnel, mine operators, land managers, researchers and anyone else involved in managing bats in and around mines. There will be poster sessions offering opportunities for students to let their expertise and voices be heard.
